The Media and Censorship

Oh how I hate television, the radio, the media. I hate MTV or Miley Cyrus. I hate that people fall for these kind of shows.

Tragedy indeed to what is happening with how the media is playing with our minds. Gone are the days when journalists and artists follow rules of censorship. Nothing is left unsaid. Too much freedom of expression. Too much hate going around, too much skin showing and what bugs me the most is the fact that it sells!

I used to love music award shows because of the performances where you get to see how talented artists are, but the recent MTV VMA was just full of trash. Miley Cyrus was so open about using marijuana and talking about sex on stage. People used to keep it a secret and be ashamed about it but now, they are even promoting it.

No, the Philippine television is not an exception.

I remember watching this show on a local channel where you write to them about your tragic life and famous artists play your role on TV. The more catastrophic story is, the better.

The plot is about a young couple having a baby together. It didn’t work out well because the guy’s family did not like the woman — a typical Filipino scene. Then, the girl got a job as a cybersex entertainer and finally got some money — which she used to buy her family a TV (which her mom eventually sold to get more money). Even though the story ended as if she became successful or got back with her guy, I don’t feel like shows like this one is worth a million peso airtime.

Half of the population probably got the story and moved on but the other half might have misunderstood and the network might have just triggered the idea that it’s okay to have that kind of life.

And here comes the television sensations — ALDUB and PASTILLAS GIRL. Sure it probably is really entertaining until the media make a hype and stirs in controversy. Seriously guys! I can see so much gossip on my newsfeed regarding these so called celebrities as if my friends on Facebook actually know them; hating, ranting and even saying nasty things! You realize you just made them rich and famous and you are still you — only a bit bitter on something that isn’t real, right?

It’s nice to have something to laugh about, I mean that’s why TV was invented — to entertain but not to take over our lives and make us forget good character.

This is one of the many reasons why we don’t have TV at home. Well we do own a couple but the idea of having cable installed is not an option right now. Even YouTube is banned for the kids. I like things to be filtered.

Radio is also a tragedy. Lately I’ve been hearing lots of swearing in the songs the stations are playing. Sometimes I’m not sure anymore if the assigned committee that monitors are even listening or are there any?

I know these guys are just working but I hope they don’t forget about social responsibility. I just can’t imagine raising my kids to this kind of environment. Correct me if I’m wrong but the media plays an important role in our life. Whatever we see, we take in, we live, we produce.

We already know what happens if we show trash on TV, just imagine what could happen if we create wholesome, intellectual, fruitful and honest ones. We could breed better generations, outstanding leaders.

Just think about it.

  1. Sad truth. You know my thoughts about the songs. I find myself surprised too when I suddenly make out the words to the most voted songs that talk about doing it OUT IN THE OPEN. Butts, boobs and illegal relationships also seem to be celebrated “as long as the feeling is right.”
As mentioned in the Bible, 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
